Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has called for a shake up to international rugby league eligibility.

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has called for a shake up to international rugby league eligibility.

“I don’t believe guys should be able to go back and forth (between countries),” Meninga said to The Courier Mail.
“What I would like to see is that every player nominates which country they want to play for right from their first registration in the NRL. That way, there is no confusion around who they are eligible for.

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has called for a shake up to international rugby league eligibility.

Under the current international rules players can represent nations in both tier one and tier two, allowing players to switch allegiances. As it stands Australia, England and New Zealand sit in tier one with Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, France and Papua New Guinea holding second tier status. Twelve months ago Murray Taulagi featured for the Kangaroos at the World Cup and played for the Australian PM’s XIII only three weeks ago. In just a few days Australia clash with Samoa and Taulagi will make his Samoa debut. Meninga believes it’s time for the system to change.

“I don’t believe guys should be able to go back and forth (between countries),” Meninga said to The Courier Mail.

“What I would like to see is that every player nominates which country they want to play for right from their first registration in the NRL. That way, there is no confusion around who they are eligible for.
